NAO engages citizens on audit, public finance processes

National Audit Office (NAO) has has stressed the commitment to enhancing citizens’ understanding of audit and public finance management processes to promote the country’s sustainable development.

Speaking on Monday in Mulanje during an audit literacy capacity-building training session for civil society organisations, NAO acting head of information systems Chikondi Pindeni said stakeholder involvement is key to successful audits because it strengthens citizens’ role in providing checks and balances.

She said: “We want citizens to be well informed so that they can participate meaningfully in public accountability processes.

“This is crucial in curbing the misuse of public funds, improving the delivery of social services and strengthening democracy.”

Mulanje Civil Society Organisations chairperson Chancy Mkandawire commended NAO for empowering them to promote transparency, accountability and good governance in the implementation of publicly funded projects.

“We will share the knowledge gained with citizens in our respective areas. Together, we will strengthen the citizen oversight role to push for the responsible use of public resources and a better understanding of audit reports,” he said.

NAO organised the session under its Audit Literacy Programme with financial support from the United Nations Childrens’ Fund.
